Description
Cold Spring Tavern painting by Michael Silbaugh.
The Tavern is situated high up on San Marcos pass on the Santa Ynes valley side of Los Padres Nation Forest just over the summit to the left before the Cold Spring Canyon Bridge on Stage Coach Rd. off of state route 154. Stage coach Rd. served as a connection between Santa Barbara mission and the mission farm at Rancho San Marcos in the Santa Ynes valley. History says that John Fremont with Kit Carson came over the pass during the Mexican- American war(1840-1848) on the way from Monterey to Los Angeles.
Mr Llewellyn Bixby built a turnpike road up San Marcos pass, which opened in 1870 and then opened an inn to provide passengers a rest from coming up the mountain. The advent of the automobile was the demise of the stagecoach. The last stagecoach ride was in 1901.
